The Realities of Homelessness at Christmas
When people face homelessness, Christmas is typically far from their minds. They’re not worrying about what gifts to buy for their loved ones. They’re not making travel plans to see their families. And they’re certainly not struggling to find the perfect decorations and lights to decorate their homes.
The realities of homelessness at Christmas are harsh and typically not something we think about, especially when we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season. But it’s something we should all be aware of.
Before seeking shelter, many of our guests did not know what celebrating Christmas truly meant. But when they experience their first Christmas season at Atlanta Mission, they experience comfort and joy — they experience the reason for the season.
Here are just a couple of the things our guests have said after spending Christmas with us for the first time:
“When I look back at the past year and realize what Atlanta Mission—and YOU—did for me, I am overwhelmed with gratitude and joy. Christmas means everything to me now.” – Angela
“I want to thank the donors for everything. Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays, new clothes, new career, and a new life. They made it all possible.” – Chilo
Be aware of those facing homelessness in your community this season. We hope you feel encouraged to help them experience joy this season — even by something as simple as offering a blanket, warm meal, or conversation.
If you’d like to help even more, you can check out the Atlanta Mission Holiday Gift Guide here. Choose to give a gift that will change a life this season.
