5 Winter Gifts That Warm the Heart

January is the coldest month in Atlanta. We often see temperatures dip into the mid 30s, and clients joining us for a warm bed or a warm meal particularly appreciate the shelter from the chilly streets.

While most people think of Christmas as the time for gift giving, Atlanta Mission sees January as a unique opportunity to bless those who come through our doors. After holiday bargain shopping yields great deals on winter clothing, and surplus holiday merchandise can find grateful use in the hands of our clients.

When the cold winds blow, those we serve appreciate the generous care of folks like you. Consider these ten winter gifts that can warm the heart.

  1. New and gently used coats

Whether you hand one to someone you pass on the street or bring your donations to one of our thrift shops, you’ll find that new and gently used coats are in great demand during the cold month of January. Many of our clients depend on their coats as a primary defense against the winter weather, and a coat that fits and insulates well can be a gesture of support as they make the brave decision to step away from life on the streets.

  1. Hats, gloves and scarf sets

While cold hands don’t necessarily indicate a cold heart, they do show that someone needs love. Hats, gloves and scarf sets may seem like small items in the face of the significant needs of homelessness, but a warm head and fingers can make a big difference in how a person living on the streets can navigate through their day.

  1. Lotion

Dry skin is a common problem in the winter. WIth less moisture in the air, skin can become tight, cracked, and painful. If you’re struggling to keep warm, dry skin adds to the other bodily discomforts you endure. Whether you give the gift of lotion to Atlanta Mission through a donation or you hand out small samples to those you meet on the sidewalk, you’ll find that moisturizing care softens the harsh edge of homelessness and brings an ounce of hope.

  1. Medicines

When we’re sick we head to the doctor. But if you’re living without a home, you may not have access to reliable healthcare. Atlanta Mission welcomes donations of over-the-counter medicines like Tylenol, Theraflu, and Motrin, as well as multivitamins to stave off illness. We want our clients to become and remain healthy, and medication is one way we can offer important care.

  1. Tissues

Runny noses are a regular part of winter living, and we always appreciate having tissues on hand to share with our clients. Small purse-sized tissues are great for handing out as you see those living in homelessness on the streets, and large boxes are great items to donate to our homes where moms can keep their kids’ runny noses from running wild and men and women can know you care, even in these smallest ways.
