World Homeless Day: Shining a Light on the Crisis in Atlanta
World Homeless Day is a global observance held annually on October 10th. It is dedicated to raising awareness about the pressing issue of homelessness. It is also a day to reflect upon the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness and to do our part to initiate change. In Atlanta, this issue hits close to home, as the city grapples with its own homelessness crisis.
Atlanta Homelessness Statistics
As of 2023, the homelessness crisis continues to challenge the metro Atlanta area. The city has seen an increase in homelessness, despite ongoing efforts to address the issue. Here are some statistics:
- There are over 10,000 people experiencing homelessness on a given night in the state of Georgia, and about a fourth of that population is in Atlanta.
- There has been an increase in individuals experiencing homelessness that also have a serious mental illness, according to the 2023 Point-in-Time Count.
- Since 2022, there has been a decline in housing placements (down by 532) that correlates with an increase in homelessness (up 33%).
Ways to Help Those Experiencing Homelessness in Atlanta
As the colder months approach, you can help provide hope for those experiencing homelessness in our community. Here are some ways you can make an impact:
- Donate seasonal clothing. We are accepting light Fall clothing as well as other urgent needs for our men, women, and children. Take a look at our urgent needs list and drop off items at our Donation Center. These items will help meet the immediate needs of those we serve.
- Hand out referral cards. With the colder months ahead, you can provide hope by referring someone to us who you see is experiencing homelessness. Print these referral cards to keep in your car or handbag to hand out to someone in need.
- Participate in our 5K race. Want to get your steps in while supporting our mission? Join us at our 5K Race to End Homelessness held in downtown Atlanta on February 17th. Your registration fee covers one night of shelter and services for someone who would otherwise spend the night in the cold, on the streets. Registration will open in early November so stay tuned for more details!
- Pray for those experiencing homelessness. Prayer goes a long way. Join us in prayer for our clients and those still experiencing homelessness in our community and worldwide. We have prayer requests on our website to use as a guide. You can share your prayer requests with us too.
World Homeless Day serves as a reminder that homelessness is a pressing issue that affects communities worldwide. In Atlanta, the homelessness crisis persists, but thankfully there is hope. Today on #WorldHomelessDay, we encourage you to take one small step to make a difference in the lives of those without a place to call home.
Let us know how you’re supporting those experiencing homelessness by tagging us on social media and using the hashtag #WorldHomelessDay. Also, hear from our friend Jeff Foxworthy on our Instagram and TikTok on how Atlanta Mission is bringing hope to those facing homelessness!
