Christmas Gift Ideas for Those Experiencing Homelessness

The holidays are quickly approaching. For most, it’s a wonderful time of year with family and friends, but for those experiencing homelessness, it’s a stark reminder of being alone. It’s a reminder of having nothing and no one.

This is also the time of year that we often keep our eyes open for ways to give back. There’s so much we can do – big and small – to help those right here in our community. Gifts for those experiencing homelessness are things we all have and often take for granted.

Here are a few things you can keep on hand for the times you may come across someone experiencing homelessness this Christmas season:

  1. Transportation gift cards. Getting around via transportation like MARTA is essential for someone experiencing homelessness. Many times, they’re looking for change to be able to get from one place to the next. Maybe it’s to a job. Or maybe they just need to get to a shelter that can help them. Transportation cards can help.
  2. Grocery gift cards. This allows those experiencing homelessness to be able to grab groceries for themselves or their family.
  3. Socks. Walking around Atlanta can leave their feet feeling worn, and when winter approaches, it leaves their feet cold. Providing warm socks can make a big difference.
  4. Blankets and coats. Finding a good blanket and/or coat to keep warm is something at the top of the list for many experiencing homelessness.
  5. Water. Even in the cold, water is an essential item that we all need. Good, clean water can be hard for those experiencing homelessness to find.

These are 5 easy things we can keep on hand and in our cars as we drive around Atlanta this holiday season. They’ll certainly bless those feeling cold, hungry, or helpless this Christmas.
You can find a list of urgent needs for our shelters here. Please note these must be dropped off at our administrative office on Bolton Road.
