The Economy’s Impact on Homelessness

It’s no surprise that our economy looks a lot different since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. No one knew what to expect, and we’ve all watched as prices of goods and services around us have increased. While for many of us these are minor inconveniences in our lives, those experiencing homelessness (or on the verge of homelessness) are seeing it differently.

Here’s a look at a few things going on right now in our economy:

  • Prices of groceries, goods, and services have all increased
  • Prices of gas have increased
  • The housing market has skyrocketed
  • Cars are in short supply and high demand, causing prices to increase

If you walk around your local grocery store, you’ll likely notice a small increase in the goods you frequently buy. For those already struggling to purchase food from the store, it’s getting harder and harder for them to get what they need with the little that they have.

When you are living out of your car, gas is important. You need it to run the car and get from point A to point B. With the increases in gas prices, many are left without being able to pay for gas. And for some, all the money they could use to save up for a home, is now going to gas to keep the only  “home” they have.

The housing market has pushed many away from buying a home, and the rental market is not much better. Prices have skyrocketed. The demand is high and it’s getting harder for those struggling to find a place to live.

For those facing homelessness in our community, these changes in the economy (along with others) have caused many issues and stressors. While many may have received stimulus payments, some are still waiting for their stimulus payments or unemployment checks to arrive. Having no home address or bank makes it more difficult to receive these payments.

Due to these changes in the economy, demand for our services is going up. Without the ability to buy groceries, gas, a car, or a home, we are seeing more people experiencing homelessness and coming through our doors.

You can help us keep up with this demand. Start here.
