THE LIGHT: August 2023

“You’re leading people into new life.”

Jessica was lost in addiction, but thanks to you, she found restoration!

Tears rolled down Jessica’s face as she watched her family home fade from view.

“I was taken away from my mom and dad when I was only 11 years old,” Jessica painfully reveals. “Both my parents are addicts, and it was a very abusive household.”

Still, Jessica loved her parents. While holding back tears, Jessica promised herself that when she was old enough, she would come back.

Coming Home

True to her promise, in her early twenties, Jessica returned home. Really, nothing had changed though. In fact, seeing addiction modeled and experiencing brokenness, Jessica found herself turning to drugs to numb her own pain.

“Since my mom and dad did drugs, I started doing it right along with them,” Jessica reveals.

Life went on, and Jessica become a mother to three sons. Yet her addiction still had a strong hold on her. But a turning point came when Jessica’s own kids were going to be taken away because of their unsafe home environment.

A wake-up call

It was the wake-up call she needed. Jessica couldn’t put her kids through the same pain she went through as a child. That’s when Jessica turned to Atlanta Mission for help.

Now, Jessica’s proud to say, “Because of Atlanta Mission, I’ve had over one year of sobriety. My spirit has grown, and I’ve never been closer to God.” Jessica’s three boys have flourished at Atlanta Mission too.

“Jacob is 12, Gunner is 7, and Runner is 5. They’re about to start school and are doing much better because this is the first stable, positive home they’ve ever had.”

While her kids are safe and secure along with her, Jessica attends every mental health class, counseling session, vocational training session, and support group she can at Atlanta Mission.

Restored life

Today, because of her commitment to change, Jessica has a job and is planning to move her family into their own apartment. She knows she would never be the healthy person she is now without your support of Atlanta Mission.

“I appreciate everything you’ve done!” Jessica exclaims.

“You’re doing what exactly God asks us to do – you’re leading people into new life in Christ. Thank you!”

Putting Together Life’s Puzzle Pieces

Walking through our Kid’s Zone at Restoration House, I noticed a few of our moms with their children putting together one of those 500-piece puzzles. They invited me to join in the fun.

When we realized a few puzzle pieces were missing though, we frantically searched up and down trying to find them. Thankfully, we found those missing pieces, then completed the puzzle to everyone’s joy and relief.

But it made me consider how the pieces of our life can fit together like a puzzle. It’s hard to feel settled when a piece is missing.

That’s why at Atlanta Mission, we talk about the five health dimensions that must be balanced for someone to have a sense of well-being. To sustainably end homelessness in a person’s life, mental health, physical support, spiritual foundation, healthy relationships, and vocational services all need to thrive.

Truly, your partnership with Atlanta Mission is bringing people back to God’s calling and purpose. You’re helping them put the puzzle pieces of their lives back together so they can flourish. Thank you for supporting holistic healing and life transformation for men, women, and children across our city.

Blessings,
