THE LIGHT: September 2021

Finding Hope and a Home

“God led me here.”

Thank you for helping Cathy find hope and a home!

Cathy never knew her mother. “I grew up in foster care and in group homes and in institutions,” she says. Cathy lacked the foundation of a family and faced rejection throughout her life. Because of this, she has been unable to build solid and trusting relationships. It’s heartbreaking, but not altogether surprising that she found herself with four little girls and pregnant on our doorstep at My Sister’s House. “I had nowhere else to go,” she says.

The start of a transformation

As soon as she arrived, Cathy was motivated to do whatever it took to change. “I was ready to get my life together, for myself and my kids,” she says. She quickly advanced through the Find Hope and Choose Help steps of our life transformation process. In just a few months, she was moved up to the Make Progress stage. Along the way, Cathy made several trusted friendships. And she felt blessed to have many people care for her and her children when she gave birth to her daughter Amaya.

Cathy’s Make Progress team surrounded her with love, care, and motivation. Her counselor helped her work through deep-seated trauma from her past.

“My counselor really listened to me,” says Cathy. “I talked and talked and got everything out. I felt so relieved.”

Her social worker helped her get child support, which was a huge help for her. She learned crucial life skills, parenting, and conflict resolution.

Hope and stability

Her children also had a dedicated team surrounding them.

“Childcare and tutoring has been huge for them,” says Cathy. “One of my children has special needs, and she has grown so much with the help of the children’s social worker and the teachers here.”

Cathy has seen her children learn to recognize colors and learn to read and write. They are also worshiping God in chapel each week.

The future looks bright for Cathy and her children. She is hoping to find housing in the next few months and wants to go to school to become a veterinarian.

“My children are in a healthy and stable state, and that has allowed me to grow and work on myself,” says Cathy. “I appreciate Atlanta Mission so much. God led me here, and the staff have given me hope again.”

Thank you for helping making stories like Cathy’s possible! Because of you, men, women, and children are finding hope!

Restoration House: A Light of Hope for Women and Children

We’re excited that Restoration House, Atlanta’s new shelter for women and children, is opening very soon!

Every evening, at Atlanta Mission, we must turn away women and children who come to us seeking shelter. The reason? Lack of capacity. Meeting this need is our top priority.

This new state-of-the art shelter will provide 102 new shelter beds for those in need and expand our services to women and children by 20%.

With the opening of this innovative, trauma-informed shelter, we no longer will be forced to turn them away.

“What are you thankful for?”

Last year, Atlanta Mission served hundreds of children. When we asked them what they were thankful for, they created these drawings:

This Thanksgiving, you can provide a meal and welcome someone home!

For most of us, Thanksgiving means home. But for those who have no home, it can be a cruel and lonely time.

But this Thanksgiving, you can turn that story of need into a story of hope.

For just $2.77, you can provide a nourishing Thanksgiving meal heaped high with savory turkey and all the trimmings.

Most important of all, that meal is served with the love of Jesus. For many, this will be the first time in a long, long time that they have felt the warm sense of home. For them, this Thanksgiving will be the day they take that first step to a whole new life.

Today, you can help make this Thanksgiving dream come true for lonely and hurting men, women, and children at Atlanta Mission.

Thankful for you!

Dear Friend,

After a year-and-a-half of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are looking forward to celebrating Thanksgiving more than ever.

So many of those we serve amaze me with their grateful hearts. They are thankful for safety, security, the things they are learning, the jobs they are starting, their recovery from drugs and alcohol, and so much more.

One of the most consistent things they are thankful for is YOU!

It is hard for them to believe that a stranger would care enough to sacrificially give so they would have a chance to discover all God has for them. For many, it’s their first chance to meet Christ and see His real love for them.

As you are celebrating Thanksgiving at your home, around the tables of Atlanta Mission people will be experiencing a love they haven’t felt in a long time. This love gives them a chance not only to be thankful but to see the possibilities God has for them!

On behalf of the men, women, and children God gives us the privilege to serve.

Thank you and may God richly bless your family as you are blessing them!

Blessings,
