What the End of the Eviction Moratorium Actually Means

On July 31st, the Eviction Moratorium comes to an end. This moratorium was put in place by the CDC during the pandemic to help provide relief. It ensured residents would not be evicted from their homes during the pandemic, especially while some were unable to work and make money.

The Eviction Moratorium was created to “prevent a historic wave of evictions this summer.” According to the CDC, “keeping people in their homes and out of crowded or congregate settings — like homeless shelters — by preventing evictions was a key step in helping to stop the spread of COVID-19.” However, the Eviction Moratorium is now set to expire at the end of July.

What does this mean?

Landlords can now start to evict residents from properties. Tenets are no longer protected.

As evictions start back up, we will certainly see more people experiencing homelessness and out on the streets. Many have not received their stimulus payments or unemployment and continue to be without work.

Millions of people around the country will be left out on the streets with no home – a mass eviction situation could be upon us, all over the country. It’s a scary situation for many.

Here’s how you can help.

The first step is to be aware that this is happening. There are many men, women, and families around our own community that are living in fear of this happening. They don’t know where they will end up next.

This also means homeless shelters like ours will start to see an increase in residents. Demand for services will continue to go up. Here are some ways you can help:

  • Pray. Pray for peace, comfort, and hope for these people.
  • Volunteer with us. (In-person and virtual opportunities are available.)
  • Start a fundraiser to help raise money.
  • Donate. Your money will help provide hope to the hundreds that will walk through our doors in the next few months.

The Eviction Moratorium has kept people safe in their homes throughout the pandemic. With the end nearing, we will certainly start to see an increase of people on the streets. More than ever before, it’s time to come together and help.
