What Those Experiencing Homelessness Need Most

On any given night in America, more than 580,000 people are experiencing homelessness according to a 2020 report by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD). And unfortunately, that number is lower in reality. It’s estimated that the actual number is twice that.

Homelessness is a temporary circumstance, not a permanent condition. It can happen to anyone in the blink of an eye, and for many different reasons.

But they all have one thing in common: they do not have a home. And for most, they also don’t have anyone to turn to for help.

Experiencing homelessness is a very lonely time.

The majority of our clients don’t have any trusted relationships in their life. There is often a history of trauma and unhealthy relationships in their past and they haven’t been able to properly deal with it.

Think about being on the streets experiencing homelessness. You didn’t have anyone to go to for help so you are now on the streets. People are walking by you without even looking your way – it’s as if you’re invisible. What a difference it makes when someone gives you a simple smile. You are seen. You are heard.

What those experiencing homelessness need most is a friend. They need someone that will listen; someone they can talk to. A friendship that creates trust in their life and shows them hope for a better future.

It’s through these friendships that we start to see what our clients actually need. We’re able to get to the root of their trauma – and work to heal. Through relationships with those experiencing homelessness, all lives involved are transformed.
