What You Can Do to Help Those Experiencing Homelessness This Thanksgiving

Right now, the need is so great in the Atlanta area.

Sadly, the pandemic is not over, and too many people are ending up on the streets after having lost their jobs and homes. Perhaps you know of someone struggling in this way.

When you’re hungry and experiencing homelessness, there really isn’t much room in your life to think about anything besides what you’ll eat and where you’ll sleep tonight. The thought of Thanksgiving and the holidays makes it even worse as it’s a reminder that you have nowhere to go.

Over the week of Thanksgiving, thousands will come to Atlanta Mission for a meal and hope. A hope for a brighter tomorrow.

As we approach this holiday season, we know how much our community wants to help others in need. Every single person can make a difference and give back.

Here’s what you can do to help those in need this Thanksgiving:

  1. Most importantly, pray. Pray for those experiencing homelessness, the struggles they’re facing and their future.
  2. Consider giving to a shelter like Atlanta Mission that will be serving meals this Thanksgiving. This time of year brings an influx of people to our shelters as they’re looking for a warm meal. Thanks to a special Home for the Holidays Matching Challenge from The Justin Landis Group, every dollar you donate will be doubled, up to $150,000 until the end of the year. You can donate here.
  3. Pass out your own Thanksgiving meal or snacks to those on the streets. There will be many that don’t make it to a shelter on Thanksgiving. Find them and share a smile and a warm meal.
  4. Donate your clothing or home items. This time of year, many are cleaning out their closets and homes. People experiencing homelessness need jackets and blankets this time of year as we head into the winter season. You can find more information here.
  5. Sign up for our 5k Race to End Homelessness. While the race isn’t happening until February, every registration covers one night of shelter and services for someone in need. You can find more information and register here.

Thanksgiving is almost here, and we’re looking forward to providing meals, care, and hope in the name of Jesus to all of those who need it. You can make that difference, too.
