More Than a Soup Kitchen, Atlanta Mission Transforms

While Atlanta Mission began as a soup kitchen during The Great Depression, it is not something that describes us today.

A soup kitchen is a place that simply provides a meal to those experiencing homelessness. Many times this is the only meal they receive, but once the meal is done, they are on their way. While we do provide meals, it is a small part is the many services we now provide. From counseling to job attainment, our ultimate goal is to change lives.

In 1967, we began offering recovery services to men facing homelessness. And in 1969, we became the first entity in the U.S. to offer services to women facing homelessness. These services offered have evolved over the years. Here’s a look at what services we offer today:

  • Food and Shelter
  • Critical Needs
  • Addiction Recovery
  • Job Attainment
  • Counseling
  • Spiritual Recovery
  • Educational Services

We not only provide these services, but we focus on building relationships and creating trust with every person that walks through our doors. The way we care for our clients is what we call The Transformation Model. This model includes 4 stages, with a goal to help clients get back on their feet. Read more about our Transformation Model and all four stages here.

Today, Atlanta Mission is the city’s largest and longest-running provider of services to homeless men, women, and children. It’s more than providing a meal for us. It’s about getting to the root cause of their homelessness. It’s about working through the trauma they have faced. And, most importantly, it’s about changing lives.

These stories are proof.
