Episode 9: Wesley’s Story

When Addiction Steals Moments: Wesley’s Journey to Healing

Addiction doesn’t just hurt the individual. It fractures families. It steals milestones, memories, and connections that can never be fully replaced.

Wesley, guest on episode 9 of Unseen Atlanta, realized that he was missing these moments. For him, the hardest part of addiction wasn’t the personal struggle, it was everything he missed. Moments he should have shared with his son were slipping away.

“I’m 40 years old,” he says, “I’m at a rehab and I’m missing things like my son’s college, you know, taking him to get to his dorm for the first time.” This very realization made him realize he needed to come home.

Addiction and Isolation

Wesley’s journey into addiction started young. What began as experimentation soon spiraled into a deeper entanglement.

“The more partying we did, the more the drugs upgraded,”

He says. He didn’t believe he was struggling with addiction, even though he was in and out of jail, and the drugs began to deeply affect his life.

What seemed manageable at first quickly turned into years of lost time, hidden struggles, and mounting consequences. Isolation became a constant companion, and Wesley found himself increasingly disconnected from the life he once envisioned for himself and his family.

The Deeper Cost

Over time, the cost of addiction grew heavier — not just for Wesley, but for the people who loved him. “I realized little simple things that I was missing,” he says.

It wasn’t just the big events, but the everyday moments that Wesley missed, especially with his son. Their relationship wasn’t what he wanted it to be. Addiction had robbed him of the ability to be consistently present, leaving gaps in both of their lives.

Finding Healing

The moment he realized his addiction was costing his son, Wesley knew he had to change. And so he did.

Wesley finally checked in at The Potter’s house. There he found community and, eventually, recovery. “Everybody made me seem like I was at home,” he says, remembering the brotherhood there fondly. And that community was the key to lasting change in his life.

Restoration and Moving Forward

Wesley now leads at the Potter’s House, with a goal of becoming a Certified Peer Specialist so he can continue to help others in recovery after graduation.

And, of course, he is now close with his son. “Now my son knows his dad didn’t give up,” Wesley says, “That’s what matters.”

Healing, for Wesley, isn’t just about staying sober. It’s about rebuilding trust, relationship by relationship, moment by moment. His story is a reminder that while addiction can steal moments, healing can rebuild relationships and futures.
