Stories of Transformation

Alkia’s Story

I’m a mom to 3 boys ages 12, 8, and 4. We were all living with my mom before arriving at Atlanta Mission, but it was crowded and I knew it was time to learn how to be independent. That’s what led me to My Sister’s House. I wanted to learn to be by myself – just me and my kids. I knew Atlanta Mission was the best place for us.

When we first arrived at My Sister’s House, I was scared. This was something new and I didn’t know what to expect. We were also in the middle of a pandemic and I was struggling with that. Learning to be independent during a pandemic is not easy.

Atlanta Mission has given me time to learn and grow. It has also given me time to really get to know each one of my boys on an individual level.

My boys are all so different and unique. My oldest is a character. He is kind and very outspoken. He also has autism, which can be challenging as his mom. My middle son is very shy and keeps to himself, while the youngest is talkative and friendly to everyone.

My boys are in virtual school this year, and they are doing really well. They have a community here at My Sister’s House. Being here has brought more structure for my boys and even us as a family.

I’ve grown as a person and a mom.

Now that I’m here, I can say that everyone at Atlanta Mission has become family. We’ve made many new friends here, and I know I can count on them.

At Atlanta Mission, I’ve also learned how to love myself; I didn’t always do that before. Coming here taught me how to act and how to take care of my kids well.

As a person of faith, I know that God sent me here for a reason. That’s why I’m still here. As much as I wanted to leave, I know God wants me here and it will have a big impact on my life. I know that as long as I put my faith in God first, He will guide me no matter what.

In the future, I’d like to settle into my own place with my boys and see what the world has in store for me.
