Sun Protection for All: Supporting Atlanta’s Homeless Population

As we hit peak summer season here in Atlanta, it is essential to remember the importance of sun protection. While most of us can easily access sunscreen, hats, and lightweight clothing, not everyone has the same privilege. In Atlanta, where 2,600+ men, women, and children are experiencing homelessness, it is vital to educate ourselves about the need for sun protection and support those in our community without a roof over their heads this summer.

Understanding the importance of sun protection

Sun protection plays a crucial role in maintaining skin health and preventing various harmful effects of prolonged sun exposure. According to this 2023 market data report, sun exposure not only causes 90% of premature skin aging resulting from sunburn, but it can also cause non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and can affect anyone, regardless of age or skin color. About 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers are caused by excessive exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In addition, about 86% of melanomas can also be attributed to exposure to UV radiation. As a result, the number of melanoma deaths are expected to increase by 4.4% in 2023.

While everyone is susceptible to the damaging effects of UV rays, homeless individuals often face additional challenges due to limited access to sun protection resources and indoor access.

Practical tips to help those facing homelessness this summer:

  1. Provide sunscreen. Sunscreen is an essential tool in protecting the skin from harmful UV rays. Coordinate with local pharmacies or sunscreen manufacturers to secure donations or a discount on sunscreen. You can hand out sunscreen to those facing homelessness as part of a summer care package or drop them off at our Donation Center.
  2. Donate summer clothing items. Distribute new or gently used wide-brimmed hats, caps, sunglasses, and lightweight, breathable clothing items that offer UV protection. You may also drop these items off at our Donation Center or thrift stores.
  3. Seek partnerships. Collaborate with local businesses, including beauty salons, sports stores, and outdoor recreational centers, to organize a donation drive to collect products that support sun protection initiatives for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. We are happy to receive donated items, however, please reach out to us first to ensure that we can accept items not listed on our urgent needs list
  4. Volunteer your time. Encourage your friends, family, or colleagues to volunteer their time and skills to support those facing homelessness this summer. Click here to learn more about our volunteer opportunities.
  5. Become a monthly donor. As a Restoration Partner, you help provide the most immediate needs for those facing homelessness this summer and all year long such as cool shelter, showers, nutritious meals, laundry services, and medical care. In addition, your ongoing support will provide rehabilitative and restorative programs to give hope and new life to those we serve.

Protecting ourselves from the harmful effects of the sun is a necessity, and no one should be left behind. The next time you are out enjoying the summer sun, remember these practical tips to support Atlanta’s homeless population and ensure that everyone has access to essential sun protection resources, regardless of their circumstances.
