A Place to Call Home

Mom and daughter find community and a place to call home

What do you think of when you hear the word “home”?

For Michele, home means a safe place for her and for her 11-year-old daughter, Mykayla.

Michele worked as a preschool teacher for 20 years in New York. But once she moved to Atlanta, she struggled to find work. Almost overnight, Michele and her daughter went from living safely in their own home to sleeping in their car.

She didn’t know where to turn for help. Thankfully, she found her way to Atlanta Mission and was welcomed by caring staff. She was apprehensive at first because she didn’t know what to expect.

“When you hear “shelter,” sometimes you’re very fearful,” says Michele. “I was just glad, after seeing people sleeping under bridges and outside in the cold, that we had someplace that we could rest our head and take a hot shower.”

She was also concerned about how her daughter would adjust to the new environment.

Mykayla, a born extrovert, says she felt right at home almost immediately.

“There were lots of kids here that I could play with,” she says. “As you can see,” adds Michele, “she has adjusted well.”

With the help of the Atlanta Mission childcare team, Mykayla was able to enroll in the local school, get the uniform and school supplies she needed, and catch up on the work she missed.

You’re giving them the opportunity to work toward their dreams.

Mykayla says her favorite part of living at Atlanta Mission is being able to “bond with my mom.”

Now that she and her daughter have a safe place to eat and sleep—a place they can feel at home—Michele has begun to dream about her own future and make plans. She wants to go back to college, get her degree, and become a counselor.

And Mykayla has big dreams of her own, listing off five different careers when asked what she wants to be when she grows up.

Because of friends like you, Michele and Mykayla found hope and a safe place to work towards their goals and dreams for the future.

A Virtual Atlanta Mission Gala

We’re incomplete without you

We invite you to join us for this free, online event, building unity amongst the Atlanta Mission community through celebrating stories of life transformation, sharing hope amidst uncertain times, and hearing further ways to engage. Special guests will include Andy Stanley and Crawford Loritts.

Provide a meal and a place to call home!

For most of us, Thanksgiving reminds us of home. But for those who have no home, it can be a cruel and lonely time.

But this Thanksgiving, you can turn that story of need into a story of hope.

For just $2.67, you can provide a hot, delicious Thanksgiving meal to someone who’s hurting.

Most important of all, that meal is served with the love of Jesus. For many, this will be the first time in a long time that they have felt the warm sense of home. For them, this Thanksgiving will be the day they take that first step to a whole new life.

Today, you can help make this Thanksgiving dream come true for lonely and hurting men, women, and children at Atlanta Mission.

Thankful for how God is changing YOU!

Dear Friend,

Every year, as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, we also pause to reflect on how God has met our needs. Part of that provision that we’re so thankful for? Your generosity.

Thanksgiving is traditionally a time when so many come to us seeking hope. They’re met here by Jesus and their lives are transformed forever. The celebration at Thanksgiving at Atlanta Mission is like none they have ever had.

But this year, due to the pandemic, Thanksgiving will be different for us all. Some family celebrations may be curtailed by social distancing. And many of our neighbors will be facing homelessness for the first time.

Your generosity is vital!

With your help, we intend to invite all our guests to a Thanksgiving meal with hot, delicious food served with care.

We love to celebrate Thanksgiving! And your generosity is just one day, but truthfully, our hearts are full of thanksgiving every day as we see the power of Christ to transform the lives of all how join Him in the work.

I thank God for your hearts to be part of this ministry that God is using in powerful ways to change and grow us all.

Blessings,

Jim Reese, President & CEO
