The State of Homelessness in Atlanta: 2024 Insights

As we navigate the mid-point of 2024, Atlanta continues to grapple with the pressing issue of homelessness. The latest data from the Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, conducted annually to estimate the number of individuals experiencing homelessness, sheds light on the current state and trends of this ongoing crisis.

Current statistics

The 2024 PIT Count revealed that there are approximately 2,867 individuals experiencing homelessness in Atlanta. This includes both sheltered and unsheltered populations, with 1,827 people in emergency shelters or transitional housing, and 1,040 unsheltered individuals. The count represents a 7% increase from the previous year, highlighting a growing need for effective interventions and support systems.

Below are a couple of key statistics from the PIT Count:

  • 25% of the homeless population are women and girls
  • 35% are over the age of 55
  • 48% of adults have a serious mental illness
  • 40% have a substance abuse disorder
  • 67% of the respondents reported having a disability
  • 37% of those individuals are currently receiving treatment for their reported conditions

The data shows the urgent need for services and resources tailored to address the diverse and complex needs of Atlanta’s homeless population.

Contributing factors

Several factors contribute to the rise in homelessness. Economic instability, lack of affordable housing, and insufficient mental health and substance abuse resources are primary drivers. The recent increase in the number of individuals utilizing transitional housing programs also points to the growing recognition and response to these needs, yet highlights the gap in permanent housing solutions.
