The Story of Restoration House: Atlanta’s New Shelter

It was over three years ago that we saw a need – more shelter space for women and children in Atlanta. There are thousands of women and children in Atlanta experiencing homelessness and looking for shelter, but currently, there are not enough beds for everyone. More than 3,000 vulnerable women and children are left without beds, out on the streets in Atlanta. We began praying and knew we needed to do something about it.

That’s why Restoration House is being built.

Plans started to form. The designs were created. And we were excited to give vulnerable women and children in Atlanta more space and safety.

As we were planning Restoration House, we turned to experts in the field of trauma-informed design and homeless services. Now, as we see the structure taking shape, it is a bright light even in the midst of a pandemic.

Here’s a look at the timeline of building this new shelter for women and children in Atlanta:

May 2020: Our Ethel Street property, The Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children, was torn down to make space for the new shelter.

June 2020: We celebrated the groundbreaking of Restoration House with our community partners.

December 2020: A topping-off ceremony was held to commemorate the progress of the building. It was during this time that many of our leaders were able to write verses and words of encouragement on the walls and poles of the building.

Fall 2021: The expected grand opening of Restoration House!

The name, “Restoration House,” comes from 1 Peter 5:10:

“And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

We’ve built this building in the middle of a pandemic, but it hasn’t slowed down our construction and plans to have a brand new facility for the women and children facing homelessness in Atlanta. We’ve seen many miracles take place to allow us to stay on schedule and open later this summer.

We see this new shelter as a true place of restoration for those we are privileged to serve.
