Why Restoration House Matters in Atlanta

Breaking the Cycle of Family Homelessness in Atlanta

Women and children make up a growing segment of Atlanta’s homeless population. According to the 2024 Point-in-Time (PIT) Countwomen and girls make up 62% of individuals in homeless families, highlighting the unique gender dynamics and vulnerabilities within this group. Many are escaping domestic violence, economic instability, or generational cycles of trauma. Restoration House, our trauma-informed shelter for women and children in Atlanta, exists to help people escape this cycle.

At Restoration House, located in downtown Atlanta, we meet every woman with compassion and dignity, and give every child the chance to feel safe, cared for, and seen. We built our campus intentionally with trauma-informed design: welcoming spaces, calm aesthetics, clear signage, and other touches that promote emotional safety.

Restoration House also operates as a low-barrier shelter, which means we minimize obstacles to entry for families in crisis. While there are basic safety requirements, women do not need documentation, employment, or a long list of qualifications to get into Restoration House, so they can receive care when they need it most – without feeling lost in the system.

Our staff are all trained in trauma-informed care, understanding that behaviors are often rooted in deep wounds. This approach focuses on empathy, stability, and healing, not punishment or rigid rules. At Restoration House, we walk with people in their pain, instead of just pushing them through the system.

Our key services at Restoration House include:

  • Safe emergency housing
  • Individualized case management
  • Life skills and parenting classes
  • Access to counseling and trauma-informed care
  • Pathways to long-term housing and employment

These services are steps in a hope-giving transformation model that Atlanta Mission has refined over decades.

A Christ-Centered Model of Restoration

Unlike many emergency shelters, Restoration House operates on the belief that transformation happens through relationships, and ultimately through Christ.

Our staff guides each person who walks through our doors with our transformation model

  1. Facing Homelessness – Acknowledging the crisis
  2. Find Hope – Experiencing safety and care
  3. Choose Help – Participating in holistic programs
  4. Make Progress – Taking real steps toward independence
  5. Sustain & Grow – Maintaining long-term success

This model recognizes that every woman and child is unique, and so is their path to healing. At Restoration House, we make sure that families are heard, empowered, welcomed, and hopeful.
