Ways to Give Back this Summer

As the warm summer days embrace us with sunshine and longer days, it’s an ideal time to extend a helping hand to those in need. At Atlanta Mission, our mission is to provide refuge, hope, and a pathway to a brighter future for our homeless neighbors. This summer, we invite you to join us in our mission and make a meaningful impact on the lives of those we serve.

Dangers of the summer heat

New projections by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) show that the state of Georgia – along with most of the U.S. – is expected to face above-average temperatures through September. As temperatures rise, so do the dangers to those facing homelessness. The summer heat can pose significant health risks such as:

1. Heat-absorbing asphalt. City blacktops and asphalt surfaces absorb heat, making the ground feel significantly hotter than the air temperature. This can increase the risk of burns and exacerbate the overall heat exposure for those who spend most of their time outdoors.

2. Dehydration. In extremely warm weather, dehydration can set in as little as 30 minutes. Without adequate access to water, individuals are at high risk of severe health complications.

3. Steady sun exposure. Continuous exposure to the sun raises body temperatures, leading to severe sunburns, heatstroke, or even death. For those living on the streets, they are left with no choice but to seek shade, hydration, and sun protection.

Ways you can help

1. Volunteer your time. Volunteers are the heart and soul of our shelter. By offering your time, you can directly impact the lives of our clients and contribute to our daily operations. Here are some ways you can volunteer:

  • Serve meals: Help serve a pre-prepared meal during lunch or dinner. Your friendly presence can make a world of difference.
  • Lead a class: Share your skills and knowledge by leading or co-leading a class for our clients. Whether it’s personal development, job training, or offering spiritual guidance, your expertise is invaluable.
  • Organize a social activity: Plan a social activity with a group of coworkers or friends, such as a game night, movie night, or manicures to engage and uplift our community.

2. Donate summer urgent needs. In-kind donations are essential in meeting the basic needs of our clients. We are now accepting the following urgent needs items this summer:

  • Clothing: New and gently-used summer clothing for male and female teens
  • Toiletries: Body wash, lotion, deodorant, disinfectant wipes
  • Baby items: Baby lotion, baby wash

3. Spread awareness. Raising awareness and educating others about homelessness is crucial in garnering support to help as many people as possible this summer. You can help spread awareness through:

  • Social media: Follow us on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook and share our posts with your network. Your voice can amplify our mission and reach more people.
  • Host a peer-to-peer fundraiser: Organize a fundraising event or ask people to donate in honor of your birthday. Every effort counts.
  • Create a care package: Let our homeless neighbors know where they can get help by creating a summer care package with a referral card to our shelters.

4. Pray for us. We believe in the power of prayer. Please keep our clients, staff, and volunteers in your prayers. Pray for strength, guidance, and the continued provision of resources to support our mission. You can share your prayers with us HERE.

Your involvement, whether through volunteering, donating, or praying for us, is a vital part of our work at Atlanta Mission. You can help bring hope, love, and tangible assistance to those who need it most this summer. Thank you for your support and commitment to making a difference in our community.
